Facemash
So, what’s Facemash? It’s actually Facebook’s dad. There’s a good movie about how all the Facebook idea came out. It was a revenge at the beginning but Mark saw that people liked it.
To accomplish this, Mark hacked the "facebooks" Harvard maintained to help students identify each other and used the images to populate his Facemash website. A simple idea, putting two pictures next to each other and choose which girl is ‘hotter’ than the other. But is not as simple as it looks because you’re choosing which girl is hotter and obviously which one you would prefer. So it’s a competition to choose only one person.
I think mostly the impact was they weren’t
just people taken out from the web, but they were your friends. So the impact
was because maybe for first time you were judging people you know and the
competition was near to you.
We can see the initial site generated
450 visitors and 22,000 photo-views in its first four hours online. They really
have a good impact in this site and people want more.
But this has consequences the site
was quickly forwarded to several campus group list-servers. However, the
website was shut down by Harvard executives a few days after it opened. Mark
Zuckerberg faced charges of violating copyrights, breach of security, and
violating individual privacy for stealing the student pictures that he used to
populate the website. He later faced expulsion from Harvard University for his
actions. However, all the charges were eventually
dropped.
After that, the Winklevoss twins came out with the idea of creating a website were you could get in touch with all the people of your school, so it was an elite website. People always want to be in the VIP so this was the perfect website. Of course when the website had success they made it wide open for everybody because that way there were going to be millions of users in the world rather than a couple thousands from elite colleges.
Nowadays we all know that Facebook is the number one social website because that way you can get in touch with your friends no matter where you at. You can also know what they’re doing, where are they studying, their relationship status to know if you have any chance with the boy/girl you like, their favorite stuff and thousands things more like playing games online, promote your business, and be in touch with your costumers.
