Change the rules of the Academy Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Hollywood announced changes to the rules of the Academy Awards, which shall take effect for the next installment of the statuettes.

Now the voting members will receive DVDs of documentaries, shorts and foreign films nominated. Thus, all members may cast votes in these categories, which until the last edition were reserved only for a special committee, according to the site shows E! Online.

Oscar voters will not have to see nominated films in movie theaters mandatory to cast their votes. The move ends up being beneficial for those films that do not have a theatrical release in the United States, and have the same opportunity as blockbusters.

Before the final round of voting, the Academy mailed to members DVDs of films in the categories of Best Foreign Language Film, Documentary, Short, Short Cartoons and Action Short Film.

The rest of the nomination process remains unchanged for 2014 delivery, scheduled for March 2.
